Description: Portrait of a Lady. In this three-quarter-length portrait, the sitter is presented sitting in an armchair, facing out of the painting. Following the tradition of mid-eighteenth-century French portraiture, the sitter is shown in a gown which is highly decorated with bows of contrasting fabric, layered sleeves of lace and accessorised with pearl jewellery. The lady, woman, looks out of the portrait with a confident and compelling gaze. Although the sitter is unidentified, Colson conveys her possible profession as a musician or actor through the sheet music which she holds in her right hand.
