This jardiniere, designed by James Tissot, has a bronze frame with gilt-bronze mounts. It has copper panels decorated in cloisonne enamel, with scenes of the sea and a lake.
This jardiniere formed part of a group of over twenty pieces of cloisonne enamel exhibited by Tissot at the Dudley Gallery, Picadilly, London in 1882. The complete collection, comprising a large sculpture, vases, jardinieres, trays, teapots, plaques and trial pieces remained unsold and returned with Tissot to Paris later that year. It has been established that Tissot had in his collection a rare Ming gilt and enamel jardiniere which formed the model for this jardiniere, not only in the overall shape but also in the design of the panels.
The jardiniere is used by the museum to illustrate the history of modern design.
