De Ruyter's Raid on The English Ships off Chatham and Upper Castle. The Dutch and English were fighting over trade issues, including slaves and sugar. Led by Admiral De Ruyter, the Dutch burnt many English ships, including the ship Loyal London, depicted in the centre of this painting flying the flag of the City of London. At the left, the Dutch have boarded the Royal Charles, the pride of the English fleet.
