The Signal. On the left of this painting two children stand on the shore signalling to distant ships with a scarf. The vivid colours convey the intense light particular to the coast. The atmosphere is also created by the use of loose brush-strokes to suggest the movement of the sea breeze on the children's clothes and hair.
