Painting from the Fine Art collection. "Battle Scene" showing a cavalry battle. The figures are set against a range of mountains on the left which frames the scene. The figures are shown dressed in Roman armour; this choice of dress was popular in such battle scenes in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, lending an historic context to the painting. The various gestures of the figures direct the viewer's eye around the composition to follow the action of the battle. c.1750.
