Painting from the Fine Art collection. "Besse of Hardwicke, Countess of Shrewsbury" by an artist working in the manner of Hans Holbein the younger, depicting Bess of Hardwick. The sitter is shown dressed in black against a dark background. The coat of arms of the Hardwick family is placed in the top left-hand corner and an inscription has been included on the other side of the sitter. The wealth of Bess of Hardwick is displayed in her black costume; black was one of the most expensive dyes to produce in the sixteenth century. c.1720.
