Painting from the Fine Art collection. "Stormy Sea from the Hotel Metropole" by Benjamin Constant, showing a circular window at the Hotel Metropole framing the view of a storm approaching across the sea. c.1890.
The circular window at the Hotel Metropole, Brighton, frames the view of a storm approaching across the sea. This compositional device allowed the artist to focus on the intensity of the breaking waves, juxtaposed with grey clouds over the horizon. By placing the line of the horizon just above the centre, Constant was able to direct the viewer's attention to the waves and the intensity of the storm.
