Silver and ivory commemorative trowel. 'Presented to James Warnes Howlett Esq. Chairman of the Board of Commissioners on the Occasion of his Laying the Foundation Stone of the New Town Hall, Hove, May 22 A.D. 1880.' engraved around the edge. The trowel features engravings of a ship, possibly a representation of a 16th Century French Gallery commemorating French attacks on the coast of Hove, and birds including a martlet, owl and swift. In the curved point is an owl and the Latin word 'Vigilo' which in this context may mean awake, alert, watchful or vigilant. London hallmarks on the reverse with heart inside a sun or flower and 'TP' in rectangle of Hart Son Peard & Co. (Thomas Peard).
