Photographic print of Ditchling Road Hill Pond, Sussex. Associated envelope with typewritten details on front reading 'Photo of DITCHLING ROAD HILL POND. Taken 30th March, 1929. Mid-day.' with further details of photography including light value, plate speed, exposure, etc. The reverse of the envelope features handwritten notes by the photographer, Herbert Samuel Toms, regarding the pond: 'This pond was cleared to solid chalk bottom July 1928. Storms of late July + early August covered bottom (12 ft diam) with water + rains during winter filled bottom (abt. 30 ft). Pond has held water right up to time of photography, + through droughts. Diam of water abt. 18' when photo taken; Note: Pond nearly dry, only abt. bucketful water, evening of 17th April, 1929; Pond dry, Sunday 21st Apr. also Tegdown Pd. + Patcham Pd. owing to long drought; 6th May 1929. After 7/8" rain on 5th pond with 16' x 12' area of water'. Envelope also numbered '9'. Photograph developed and printed by Stead & Co. of 23 Duke Street, Brighton.
