This photographic print shows two views of the Chain Pier, Brighton. One has been taken on 4 December 1896, showing the intact structure. The other shows the pier on 5 December 1896, the day after it was destroyed by a storm. The Chain Pier was Brighton's oldest pier, having originally been built in 1822-1823. By the 1890s, the pier was declining in popularity as visitors preferred the more modern features offered by the West Pier and Aquarium. In 1891, the pier was scheduled for demolition as one of the conditions for constructing the Palace Pier. The great storm of 1896 removed the need for active demolition, by destroying the entire structure. Although it had declined in popularity, the collapse of the pier was regarded with sadness by many local people. This photographic print was probably produced to be sold as souvenir to such people. It also records the destructive power of storms on coastal structures.
