Christ Crowned with Thorns (Ecce Homo). Christ is shown with his hands bound, crowned with thorns, a label round his neck with the inscription 'Ecce Rex Vester', (Behold Your King), and holding instruments of the passion. A red 'aura' surrounds his head.

What appears to be a date of 1521 is carved into the back of the panel. There are several variants of this painting, the prototype of which would appear to be the figure of Christ on the outer wings of the Brussels Museum triptych (Friedlander, M., Vol. IX, Plate III). Variants almost identical to the present work are at Verona Museum and in the Wedells Collection at Hamburg. Another variant with rather more differences, in the National Gallery, London, is interesting in this connection, since it came, like the present work, from the Willett Collection.
