This photographic print shows evacuees arriving at Brighton Station during the Second World War. Crowds of children carrying gas masks can be seen gathered outside of a train, with numerous railway guards in attendance. Children were first evacuated to Brighton on 1 September 1939, two days before war was officially declared. By July 1940, Brighton was no longer considered a safe area for children, and 30, 000 evacuees were relocated, along with numerous local children.
